Reduce Sworn Officer Attrition to 115 Officers Per Year
Mayor Strickland is working to increase the city's sworn officer count to 2,300 officers by 2023. To reach this goal, the city is taking steps not only to recruit more officers, but also to encourage current officers to continue their career with the Memphis Police Department. To that end, the city has instituted programs for retention and referral bonuses and provided three pay increases since January 1, 2016. These efforts have contributed to a drop in officer attrition from 182 officers in 2015 to 112 officers in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Great Resignation seen nationally have created new challenge but we continue to work to reduce this further and retain our talented officers through retention bonuses, sign on bonuses, and increased pay as well as other innovative programs.
